مَطَرَتِ السَّمَآءُ, aor. ـُ {يَمْطُرُ}, inf. n. مَطَرٌ, [The sky, or, as it sometimes means, the rain,] rained; as alsoأَمْطَرَت↓: (T, Ṣ, Mṣb:) but the former is said to relate to that which is sent in mercy, and the latter to that which is sent in punishment. (Mṣb.) See also what follows.

[Both are also trans. You say,] مَطَرَتْهُمُ السَّمَآءُ, (A, Ḳ,) aor. ـُ {يَمْطُرُ}, (TA,) inf. n. مَطْرٌ and مَطَرٌ; (Ḳ:) andأَمْطَرَتْهُم↓, (A, TA,) which latter is the worse form, [as will be seen below,] The sky rained upon them. (A, Ḳ, TA.) And مُطِرْنَا We were rained upon; we had rain. (Ṣ. TA,)

You say also, مَطَرَهُمْ خَيْرٌ, and شَرٌّ, ‡ [Good, and evil, poured upon them; or betided them]. (A.) And مَطَرَنِى بِخَيْرٍ ‡ He did good to me. (Ḳ.) And مَا مَطَرَنِى بِخَيْرٍ ‡ [He did not any good to me]. (A.) And مَا مُطِرَ مِنْهُ خَيْرًا, [in the CK, incorrectly, خَيْرٌ,] and بِخَيْرٍ, ‡ Good did not betide him from him, or it. (Ḳ, TA.) Butأَمْطَرَهُمُ ٱللّٰهُ↓ is only said in relation to punishment: (Ḳ, TA:) as in the saying in the Ḳur, [xxvi. 173, and xxvii. 59,] وَأَمْطَرْنَا↓ عَلَيْهِمْ مَطَرًا فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ ٱلْمُنْذَرِينَ ‡ [And we rained upon them a rain, and evil was the rain of the warned people]: and again in the Ḳur, [xv. 74,]وَأَمْطَرْنَا↓ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ ‡ [And we rained upon them stones of baked clay]: the stones being regarded as rain because of their descent from the sky: some, however, hold that مَطَرَ andأَمَطَرَ↓ are the same in meaning. (TA.)

مَرَّ الفَرَسُ يَمْطُرُ, inf. n. مَطْرٌ (Ṣ, A) andمُطُورٌ↓; (Ṣ;) andيَتَمَطَّرُ↓; (Ṣ, A;) ‡ The horse passed, or went, running vehemently, like the pouring of rain: (A:) or went quickly; or hastened; (Ṣ;) as also مَطَرَ الفَرَسُ, (Ḳ,) aor. as above, (TA,) and so the inf. ns.: (Ḳ:) or this last signifies the horse was quick in his passing, or going, and in his running; and soتمطّر↓. (TA.) You say also,تَمَطَّرَ↓ بِهِ فَرَسُهُ (A, TA) ‡ His horse ran, and hastened, or went quickly, with him. (TA.) And مَطَرَتِ الطَّيْرُ, andتمطّرت↓, ‡ The birds hastened, or were quick, in their descent. (Ḳ.) Andتمطّرت↓ الخَيْلُ ‡ The horses came, (Ḳ, TA,) and went, quickly, (TA,) outstripping one another. (Ḳ, TA.)

مَطَرَ فِى الأَرْضِ, inf. n. مُطُورٌ; andتمطّر↓; ‡ He (a man) went away in, or into, the country, or land; (Ṣ, Ḳ;) and hastened; as also قَطَرَ. (TA, art. قطر.)

ذَهَبَ البَعِيرُ فَمَا أَدْرِى مَنْ مَطَرَ بِهِ (Ṣ, Ḳ *) ‡ [The camel has gone away, and I know not who has gone with it, or] has taken it: (Ḳ:) and in like manner, ذَهَبَ ثَوْبِى الخ ‡ my garment has gone,, &c. (TA.)

امطر ٱللّٰهُ السَّمَآءَ God made the sky to rain. (Ṣ, Mṣb.)

امطر المَكَانَ He found the place rained upon. (Ṣgh, Ḳ.)

أَمْطَرْنَا We were in rain. (TA.)

كَلَّمْتُهُ فَأَمْطَرَ, (Mubtekir El-Kilábee, A, Ḳ,*) andإِستمطرَ↓, (Mubtekir, A,) ‡ I spoke to him, and he lowered his eyes, looking towards the ground, (أَطْرَق, Mubtekir, A, Ḳ, [which also signifies he was silent, not speaking, but accord. to the TA, (see 10,) should not be so rendered here,]) and his forehead sweated. (A, Ḳ.)

تمطّر He exposed himself to the rain: (A, Ḳ:) or he went out to the rain and its cold. (Ḳ.)

استمطر He asked, or begged, or prayed, for rain; (Ṣ, Mṣb, TA;) as alsoتمطّر↓. (TA.) You say خَرَجُوا يَسْتَمْطِرُونَ ٱللّٰهَ, andيَتَمَطَّرُونَهُ↓, [They went forth praying to God for rain.] (A, TA.)

[Hence,] استمطرهُ ‡ He sought, desired, or demanded, his beneficence, or bounty; (A, TA;) he asked him to give like rain. (Ṣ.)

[And hence, perhaps,] استمطر لِلسِّيَاطِ † He endured patiently the whips [as though he desired that the stripes should fall like rain upon him]. (TA.)

And استمطر † He was silent; he did not speak [when spoken to, as though he desired that words should pour upon him like rain]: in the Ḳ, this meaning is assigned to أَمْطَرَ, which should not be used in this sense: see also مُسْتَمْطِرٌ; and see 4. (TA.)

المَالُ يَسْتَمْطِرُ ‡ [The camels, or sheep,, &c.,] go out to the rain. (A.) See also 5.

استمطر ‡ He (a man) sough shelter from the rain. (TA.)

استمطر ثَوْبَهُ He (a man) put on his garment in the rain. (Ibn-Buzurj.)

مَطَرٌ Rain: (A, Mṣb, Ḳ, TA:) pl. أَمْطَارٌ. (Ṣ, A, Mṣb, Ḳ.) See مَطْرَةٌ: and see also ظَهْرٌ, p. 1929, a.

مَطْرَةٌ [A rain; a shower of rain]. (A; and Ṣ, Ḳ, voce مَغْرَةٌ, &c.) You say مَطْرَةٌ مُبَارَكَةٌ [A blessed rain.] (A.) See مَطَرٌ.

مَطَرَةٌ, (Fr, Ṣgh, Ḳ, also mentioned in the L, on the authority of IAạr, and in such a manner as implies that it may be alsoمَطْرَةٌ↓, TA,) A [skin of the kind called] قِرْبَة: (Ḳ, &c.:) applied in the present day to an إِدَاوَة and the like: (TA:) [I have found it now applied to a large bottle of leather, and of wood: pl. أَمْطَارٌ.]

مَطْرَانٌ [sometimes pronounced مِطْرَانٌ, and مُطْرَانٌ, A metropolitan]: see جَاثَلِيقٌ.

مَطَّارٌ ‡ A horse that runs vehemently. (Ḳ, TA.)

سَمَآءٌ مَاطِرَةٌ, (A, Mṣb,) andمُمْطِرَةٌ↓, (A,) A raining sky. (A, Mṣb.) See also مِمْطَارٌ.

يَوْمٌ مَاطِرٌ, (A, Ḳ,) andمُمْطِرٌ↓, (Ḳ,) andمَطِير↓, (A,) andمَطِرٌ↓, (Ḳ,) which last is a possessive epithet, (TA,) ‡ A day of rain. (A, Ḳ.)

مِمْطَرٌ (Ṣ, Ḳ) andمَمْطَرٌ↓ andمِمْطَرَةٌ↓ (Ḳ) What is worn in rain, to protect one; (Ṣ;) a garment of wool, (Ḳ,) worn in rain, (TA,) by which to protect one's self from the rain; (Ḳ;) from Lḥ. (TA.)

سَمَآءٌ مِمْطَارٌ A sky pouring down abundance of rain. (A.) See also مَاطِرٌ.

مَمْطُورٌ ‡ A place, (Ḳ,) and a valley, (A,) rained upon, or watered by rain; as alsoمَطِيرٌ↓; (A, Ḳ, TA;) andمَطِرٌ↓, as in a verse cited voce خَطْوَةٌ: and soمَطِيرٌ↓ andمَطِيرَةٌ↓ applied to a land (أَرْضٌ). (TA.)

خَرَجَ مُتَمَطِّرًا He went forth into the gardens and fields after rain. (A.)

طَائِرٌ مُتَمَطِّرٌ ‡ A bird hastening, or going quickly, (Ṣ, TA,) in its descent; (TA;) [as alsoمَاطِرٌ↓, of which the pl., مُطَّرٌ, occurs in the following ex.:] Ru-beh says,

* وَالطَّيْرُ تَهْوِى فِى السَّمَآءِ مُطَّرًا *

[And the birds descend in the sky, hastening]. (TA.) مُتَمَطِّرٌ is also applied to a horseman, as signifying hastening, or going quickly. (Ṣ.)

مُسْتَمْطَرٌ ‡ A man [from whom beneficence, or bounty, is sought, or desired: and hence,] naturally disposed to beneficence, or bounty. (IAạr, TA.)

‡ A place that is open and uncovered. (A, Ḳ.)

مُسْتَمْطِرٌ [Asking, begging, or praying, for rain.]

[Hence,] ‡ Seeking, desiring, or demanding, beneficence, or bounty, (Lth, Ḳ,) from a man. (Lth.) You say, مَا أَنَا مِنْ حَاجَتِى عِنْدَكَ بِمُسْتَمْطِرٍ ‡ I am not covetous of obtaining from thee the object of my want. (IAạr.)

‡ A place needing rain. (A, Ḳ.)

‡ Silent; not speaking [when spoken to, as though desiring that words should pour upon him like rain]. (Ḳ.)

[One] on whom rain has fallen. (Ḳ.)
