1. ⇒ ملث

مَلَثَهُ, aor. ـُ {يَمْلُثُ}, inf. n. مَلْثٌ, He soothed, or tranquilized his mind, with words; spoke to him sweetly, or pleasantly; soothed him with agreeable words; (Ṣ, Ḳ;) not meaning to fulfil his words: as also مَلَذَهُ, aor. ـُ {يَمْلُثُ}, inf. n. مَلْذٌ: (TA:) ex. سَأَلْتُهُ حَاجَةً فَمَلَثَنِى I asked him to do a thing that I wanted, and he soothed my mind by a promise, not meaning to fulfil it. (A.)

In like manner, He made him a promise, (as though he would repel him from him, Ṣ,) not meaning to fulfil it. (Ṣ, Ḳ.) Accord. to Ibn-Abi-l-Hadeed, He made him a concealed promise: but this is a strange explanation. (MF.)

مالثهُ, (inf. n. مِلَاثٌ, TA,) He treated him with dissimulation, and jested, or joked, with him. (Ḳ.)


مَلْثٌ

مَلْثٌ andمَلَثٌ↓ andمُلْثَةٌ↓ The first, or commencement, of the blackness of night: (Ḳ:) or it is after the سَدَف: (TA:) or the first, or commencement, of the blackness of the place of sunset: when it has become intense, and the last عِشَآء has come, it is called مَلَس. (IAạr.)

أَتَيْتُهُ مَلَثَ↓ الظَّلَامِ, (Ṣ, Ḳ,) and مَلْثَ الظلام, (Ḳ,) and عِنْدَ ملثِهِ, (TA,) I came to him at the period when the darkness became confused, (Ṣ, Ḳ,) and had not yet become very intense, [as it has] when thou sayest أَخُوكَ أَمِ الذِّئْبُ [(Is this) thy brother, or the wolf?]; (Ṣ;) i. e. at the time of the prayer of sunset, and after it. (Aṣ, Ṣ.)

مَا كَانَ عَهْدُهُ إِلَّا وَلْثًا وَوَعْدُهُ إِلَّا مَلْثًا [His compact was not otherwise than weak, and his promise not otherwise than one not meant to be fulfilled]. (A.)


مِلْثٌ

مِلْثٌ One who does not become satiated with coitus. (Ḳ.) You say رَجُلٌ مِلْثٌ and إِمْرَأَةٌ مِلْثٌ. (TḲ.)
