Arabic Letter و
The twenty-seventh letter of the alphabet; called وَاوٌ: it is one of the class termed شَفَهِيَّة [or labials], and is a letter of augmentation.
For the uses of و as a particle see Supplement; for و in the sense of بل see a verse in art. قَصَدَ; و giving fulness of sound to ـُ, see نَظَرَ; و used لِلتَّذَكُّرِ, see أَلِفُ التَّعَايِى in art. ا, and see أَلِفُ الإِسْتِنْكَارِ; و in the sense of ب, see a verse in art. عَسِيلَ.
As a numeral it denotes Six.
Supplement:
وَ
وَ: you say, سَارَ زَيْدٌ وَعْمْرٌو, using و as a conjunction; rather than وَعَمْرًا: and سِرْتُ وَزَيْدًا, using و as [a prep.] denoting concomitance; rather than وَزَيْدٌ. (I’Aḳ, p. 161.)
مَا أُمِّى وَأُمُّهُ; and مَا أَنَا وَطَلَبُ الوَحْشِ: see أُمٌّ: and see another ex. in a verse cited voce حَلِمَ. In the Ḳur, ii. 121 some read وَإِسْمٰعِيلُ; and others وإِسْمٰعِيلَ. In مَا لَكَ وَزَيْدًا, the و denotes concomitance; What hast thou in common, or to do, with Zeyd? or it is for مَا لَكَ وَلِزَيْدٍ.
وَ in وهُوَ لَكَ: see حَمْدٌ.
الوَاوُ لِمُطْلَقِ الجَمْعِ [The و denoting unrestricted conjunction, not necessarily implying simultaneousness nor relative order]. (I’Aḳ, p. 254.)
وَا
